Why Every Successful Person Spends Time Alone

01. September 2017

Being alone has a power that very few can handle,” – Steve Aitchinson

It was a Friday night, the wind billowing against of my window. Sitting in my chair, rocking back and forth deciding what I should do. I’d been alone for the past twenty-fours without talking to anyone.

In that moment, an idea struck me. With my laptop in hand, I typed away. Word after word showed up on the screen in front of me. By night’s end, I had over 5,000 words typed. That was a point in my life where I’d never typed over 1,000 words in one sitting.

My first book was under way. This was before Become The Lion and before I started anything worth mentioning. I continued to soak in my alone time.

Within a few months, I had an entire 72,000-word novel produced. One I’m set to release within the next few months after taking a leave of absence.

Reflecting on those days when I was first writing the book, I couldn’t think about why I hadn’t published the book.

Fast forward a few months later. It was a Saturday night, and I hadn’t spoken to anyone since the previous Friday morning. My thoughts and I were having a conversation with each other. Then it struck me again, I realized I hadn’t published the book.

I tried my best to retrace my steps the best I could. It dawned on me that I hadn’t had enough alone time over the past few months. I’d been surrounded by people constantly and it hurt my creativity.

For the past few months, I’ve made it an effort to spend at least one day per week without coming into contact with someone else even it’s only for half a day.

When I give myself alone time, that’s when the magic happens. My best ideas come from a place of solitude. But there’s more to it than that, every successful person needs to spend time alone.

Need To Recharge

We live in a world where people are constantly moving. We receive notifications from the time we wake up to the time we go to bed. If we aren’t attached to surrounding ourselves with people all the time, we’re attached to the device in our own pocket.

People think the idea of being alone and recharging, that they are going to be lonely. It’s quite the opposite. Have you ever noticed that even if you are with others, you’re not yourself? That’s because you haven’t taken the time to recharge.

When you’re around people all the time, you can develop a subconscious need for external validation. What will happen on the day when you find yourself alone because everyone else is busy? By getting rid of your need for external validation and taking time to recharge, you’ll experience less stress in your world. Because with external validation you put an unwanted need to be liked by others. No matter what you do, not everyone will like you.

Every successful person understands that at a certain point they need to recharge or else they’re going to burnout.

When you continue to push and push and push, you will wear yourself thin. Sometimes you need to take a step back to focus on what you’re doing and what you’re trying to accomplish.

If you’re surrounded by others and with the media, we can gain a false sense of what it means to be successful.

You’re putting in the work but not seeing any satisfaction. This is a tell-tale sign you need to recharge.

Learn Who You Are

We can move so fast we forget who we are. When you’re alone, you can take the time to decide if you’re living the life you want or someone else’s predestined plan for you.

When we’re with people, we can take on their thinking. Sometimes that’s not going be good. Your ideas aren’t your own but rather a spinoff of what you heard someone say.

In a place of solitude, you learn who you are because you’re allowing yourself to bring your sub-conscious thoughts into your conscious mind.

When you’re thinking all day, you may not realize the thoughts you are having. You might have unwanted thoughts and not realize how harmful they are.

The world is negative, it’s not a secret. There’s negativity everywhere you go. If you aren’t careful, you’ll develop negative thoughts along with the masses.

When you take time to learn who you are, you find happiness and positivity in the person you already are.

People perceive they have to act a certain way to get others to like them. What they don’t realize is that they are already perfect the way they are. We can get so hung up on what on what other’s think of us we forget the beauty that’s already inside of us.

When I’d spend time alone, I could finally realize who I am as a person and what I stood for. I wasn’t subject to other people’s thoughts or opinions. I know if I told people on that Friday night I was going back and writing a book, they’d talk me out of it.

By spending time alone, I finally learned who I am. Each time I spend time alone, I learn more about myself that I never knew.

You Become Creative

Your creative potential will be its greatest when you spend time alone. My best ideas always come from the time I spend alone.

You will allow yourself to analyze your thoughts. Because when you’re shifting your thoughts from the world and people around you, you can focus on yourself.

Wouldn’t it be great to know that when you spend time alone, something great happens? The successful already know this and use it their advantage.

The next time you’re alone, take a piece of paper and pen and write what your ideal life would look like.

A reason that this exercise works great when you’re alone is because you can think independently.

If you find yourself out of ideas or don’t know the direction to take your life, you need to stop and spend time alone.

I credit spending time alone to the creation of the book I’d written. There have been many times when I spend time alone and come up with ideas that are life altering.

When you spend time alone, you allow yourself to become more creative.

Get More Work Done

It’s super easy to become distracted when you try to work with others. When you spend time alone, you’re unplugging yourself from the world. It’s during this time you can get your most important work done.

Most people tell themselves they don’t have enough time to accomplish a certain task. What they don’t realize is that they are essentially saying that the task isn’t a priority. Because if it was a priority, they’d find the time to get it done. You find that time when you’re alone.

You’ll concentrate more on your work when you rid yourself of the distractions that are a commonality in everyday life. How would it feel that every time you work, you’ll accomplish more than most people do the entire week?

Understand that there’s a time to be a social and there’s a time to work. When it’s time to work, you must create a space in which you can work alone. You allow no one or anything to disrupt you, nothing.

As an entrepreneur or in any endeavor, it will take massive amounts of work to become successful. If you continue to start and stop, you will lose any momentum you created for yourself. It’s always easy to continue on with your work than it is to stop and pick back where you left off. If you stop, you need to have finished your task and when you get back be working on a different task.

To become more successful get acquainted with the idea you must spend time alone to bring out your best work.

Become SelfReliant

It’s easy to fall dependent on others to get your needs met. To become selfreliant you must fall in love with the idea of being alone.

As you grow as a person, learn to take care of yourself and make your own decisions. If you’re around people, you make group decisions. There will come a time when you need to decide on your own and you will be lost.

When you spend a day by yourself, plan how that day will go. Because no one should ever plan your days for you.

If you haven’t yet, realize that this is your life. It’s up to you to make your own decisions. When you spend too much time allowing others to take responsibility for your life, you end in a place you don’t want to be.

Make your own decisions. And realize that whatever happens, you have to deal with the consequences. If you spend your alone time watching TV, then that’s your own choice. No one is forcing you to partake in that activity. If you work on yourself and take advantage of your time spent alone, then that’s a choice.

No matter where you are in life, you should spend time alone. Every successful person knows it’s one of the keys to success.
